With Father’s Day coming up, it’s a good time to think about skincare for men.

Many guys have no skincare routine to speak of, or worse still, they just grab whatever their wife or partner has on the shelf!

The skin of men is very different to the skin of women, it’s thicker, has more hair follicles, and gets shaved most days! For this reason the men in our lives need a very different approach to skincare, and most prefer to keep it simple….not many men will tolerate putting 4 or 5 different lotions and potions on!

Effective skincare takes more than just washing your face with whatever soap you have lying around and hoping for the best. It’s like anything worthwhile,  it takes commitment and consistency, but with persistence, results are seen within a few weeks. Good skincare is one of the most powerful tools we have against most of the common issues men have on their faces: acne, shaving rashes, wrinkles, and sun damage.

Here’s the minimum skincare needed for men:

Ideally cleanse twice a day.

When we think of clean skin, we’re conditioned to that  dry, squeaky-clean feeling. That might feel good on your body, but that same feeling on your face is actually bad. It means your skin’s protective barrier is disrupted and you’ve stripped away good oils that keep it moisturised and protected from irritation. Instead, use a specific facial cleanser that contains moisturising ingredients, and is not too harsh.

Many guys say they don’t wear moisturiser, because they don’t like how it feels on their faces.  But finding a moisturiser you like the feel of is easy (there are more lightweight formulas coming out every day) and wearing one will, at the very least, keep your skin from feeling dry, and at the most, help it maintain moisture that will keep it looking good. Lotions and gels are better than creams if you want to avoid that greasy feeling or shiny look from a richer moisturiser.

3. Sunscreen:

You should be wearing sunscreen every day. Seriously. UV rays from the sun,  not only cause skin cancer, but are also the biggest factor in our skin’s ageing. Daily sunscreen is the most effective anti-aging product we have. But most guys don’t wear it for the same reason as moisturiser, it looks or feels greasy.  Instead of using a moisturiser, you can substitute with a sunscreen that has skin-hydrating ingredients. That way you can wear it in addition to your moisturiser or on its own if you like to keep skincare really simple.

4. If they want to step up to something more:

Exfoliating serums-Exfoliating serums are a good add on to aid in cellular turnover, and even out skin texture

Active serums- Active serums such as Vitamins A, B and C can be added to most morning and evening routines if you want to take your skincare to the next level.
