Our newest recruit, Dr Emily Schilbach, has been with Southern Cosmetics for almost six months and we continue to receive fantastic feedback about her work. Dr Emily is an experienced GP who also practices Aesthetic Medicine. This woman is one smart cookie – she graduated from Monash University in 2005 with Honours in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Following the same philosophy as Dr Jenny, Dr Emily believes in gradual and minimal cosmetic enhancement to produce the most natural results possible.
Why did you become a cosmetic doctor?
I really love skin and because I’m a General Practitioner, I wanted to extend my skills as a doctor and develop a bit more of a niche area. Working in General Practice, it’s all very serious and you’re often not delivering good news. This is a more uplifting environment for me because people are generally not sick when they come in, and they’re happy when they leave. It’s a really nice environment to work in.
What do you love about your job at Southern Cosmetics?
I love that it’s creative. It’s using medicine and science, but it’s also creative and you can look at it as design as well – designing faces, essentially. I’m a bit of a science geek, so I really get into the science of cosmeceutical skin products, and what they’re actually doing to your skin on a deeper level.
What are your special areas of interest?
I absolutely love talking about cosmeceutical or medical-grade skincare products to achieve the best possible skin texture and appearance and prevent ageing. If you start using good skin products, it means that hopefully you can delay the need to use injectables. I love the science behind what we can do in terms of treating actual dermatology conditions like acne, rosacea and pigmentation.
I also love doing injectables. It’s fun and creative, and I love seeing the results at the review a couple of weeks later.
What do you consult on?
- Cosmeceutical-grade skincare product advice
- Dermal fillers (lips & cheeks)
- Anti-wrinkle injections
- Pigmentation & photo-ageing (sun damage, melasma)
- Redness, capillaries and inflamed skin
- Acne & scarring
- Fungal nail conditions (laser treatments, prescription medicines)
- Axillary Hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating)
- Eczema / Dermatitis
- General skin quality improvement & anti-ageing advice (using therapeutic laser, LED phototherapy, radiofrequency micro-needling, microdermabrasion, carbon laser facials and skin peel treatments).
What are your hobbies outside of work?
Sport! I played a lot of tennis when I was younger, but these days it’s more pilates, gym, strength training and running. I also enjoy travelling.
Favourite travel destination?
Eastern Europe for the culture and the food. My dad was born in Poland, so my family has European heritage and I have dual citizenship. I love learning about my family’s history and culture.
