IPL Photo Rejuvenation

What is IPL Photo Rejuvenation?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a cosmetic laser treatment that’s used to treat a variety of skin conditions. IPL Photo Rejuvenation can assist with issues such as rosacea and redness, dilated blood vessels and broken blood vessels on the face, neck, chest, and hands. At Southern Cosmetics, we also use IPL to lighten and remove sunspots, pigmentation, and unwanted blotches. IPL can improve skin texture by stimulating collagen and reduce the appearance of larger pores.

How does IPL Photo Rejuvenation work?

The IPL machine emits light waves that target the hemoglobin (red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin, which is the brown pigment in sun spots and freckles. When this happens, the vessel wall is damaged or the melanin pigment fragments. The body then breaks down and absorbs the tiny vessels and the melanin, resulting in clearer skin.

What type of IPL Photo Rejuvenation equipment do you use at Southern Cosmetics?

We use a device called the Cutera LimeLight IPL. It treats fine vessels, redness, freckles, sunspots and skin tone. Redness, telangiectasia (tiny veins) and light brown spots respond well to treatment.

How does a treatment feel?

IPL Photo Rejuvenation can achieve fantastic results with little discomfort and minimal risk. Before the treatment, we may apply a gel to cool the skin. When the pulse of light is delivered, most patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation like the snapping of a rubber band. At the end of the treatment, we will remove any gel and apply moisturiser and sunscreen to the treated area.

When will you notice a change after IPL Photo Rejuvenation?

Immediately after the IPL Photo Rejuvenation treatment, brown spots will start to darken and your skin may appear slightly red. The treated area may also be mildly swollen. This typically lasts a few hours and possibly a day or longer. Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade.
For veins, the skin may look slightly redder after treatment for up to five days. Diffuse redness or telangiectasia will decrease and your mottled complexion will improve. If you’re concerned about any redness immediately after the treatment, you can gently apply makeup to the treated area.

How many sessions are usually required?

Most patients will begin to see results after one to three treatments of IPL Photo Rejuvenation. Additional treatments may be necessary for excessively sun-damaged skin.

How long will the results of the IPL Photo Rejuvenation treatment last?

Each person is different, and the results depend on your lifestyle and skin type. If you spend a lot of time unprotected in the sun, for example, the pigmentation and redness may return. For other patients, the results may be long-lasting, and an annual maintenance treatment may be all that is needed to keep the skin conditions at bay. Please speak to us about your concerns, and we’ll provide advice based on your individual needs.
