Understanding leg veins

Veins play an important role in the body – they carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Sometimes, however, the valves inside the veins may fail to close properly, and as a result, blood stagnates inside. This can lead to distended varicose veins or superficial spider veins.

Various factors can increase your risk of developing varicose or spider veins. These include being overweight, not exercising, and standing, sitting or lying down for extended periods. Women are more at risk than men, and it’s believed hormonal changes throughout a woman’s life may play a role.

Spider veins appear as clusters of blue, red or purple veins (similar to a spider’s web). They can appear anywhere on the body but are commonly found on the thighs, calves and ankles.

What type of leg vein removal treatments do you offer at Southern Cosmetics?

At Southern Cosmetics, we offer sclerotherapy and laser leg vein treatments. Depending on your individual requirements, we may suggest a combination of both techniques.

Sclerotherapy

During this treatment, a chemical solution is injected into each affected vein, causing the vein to collapse and fade from view over a few weeks. As the walls of the collapsed vein heal together, the vein can no longer carry blood.
There are several sclerosing solutions available, and the one we select will depend on the size of the vein.

How does sclerotherapy treatment work?

Patients usually receive one injection for every inch of spider vein that is treated. Each vein may require several injections, administered several weeks apart.

After the treatment, compression stockings are worn for one to two weeks. These stockings help reduce the risk of issues such as swelling, inflammation and/or clots. We recommend Jobst compression stockings, which are available from larger pharmacies and look like opaque tights, rather than medical stockings. Alternatively, fitted compression stockings can be ordered from The Healthy Legs website.

Once your treatment is complete, we usually ask you to walk around for about half an hour to aid recovery. Please allow extra time for this after your treatment.

Who is sclerotherapy suitable for?

Sclerotherapy is suitable for people with concerns about unwanted superficial (surface) spider veins. However, varicose veins (which are enlarged, knobbly and blue or purple in appearance) usually require more advanced techniques such as surgery for removal.

How does sclerotherapy feel?

The treatment should not be painful. We use fine needles for minimal discomfort. You may experience a temporary burning sensation after the injection, but it should disappear quickly.

This treatment requires no anaesthesia and is usually performed in an outpatient setting.

When will you notice a change?

During the treatment, the injection sites may become red or raised, but only temporarily. Some patients experience bruising for a couple of weeks, and in some instances, the treated vein may become hard and lumpy after the session. You should see results within a few weeks.

You can help prevent new spider veins from forming by wearing support stockings as required, exercising regularly and by keeping your weight in check.

How many sessions are usually required?

We usually recommend 2 to 3 or more sessions, each lasting about 45 minutes

Laser Leg Vein Removal

In some instances, laser may be a more appropriate means of treating your leg veins. We may also recommend a combination of sclerotherapy and laser as part of your treatment plan.

How does laser leg vein removal work?

Pulses of laser light are directed at the vein, which causes a heating and coagulation effect. This eventually destroys the vessel and it is later reabsorbed by your body.

We use two state-of-the-art systems for this type of treatment: the Cutera Nd:YAG vascular laser and the Fotona SP Dynamis Nd:YAG.

Who is the treatment suitable for?

Laser leg vein removal is suitable for most skin tones. It can effectively treat a broad range of leg veins, from tiny spider veins to deep reticular veins. Larger varicose veins usually require surgery.

For patients who would rather avoid injections, our laser treatments may be an attractive alternative.

How does the treatment feel?

You may experience a mild stinging sensation, but there is usually minimal discomfort during the treatment, nor in the recovery phase.

When will you notice a change?

Results are often seen as early as two to six weeks, but it may take several months to see the final results.

How many sessions are usually required?

Typically, 3 or more sessions are required for this type of laser leg vein removal. The number of treatments necessary depends on the size of the vessels being treated.
