It’s that time of year when most of us are getting back into the swing of things and trying our hardest to follow through with our New Year’s resolutions. If you haven’t already made any, it’s not too late! Here are some New Year’s resolutions that will do you and your skin a world of good!

Resolution #1: Eat clean

When it comes to your skin, eating a healthy, balanced diet that’s rich in nutrients can do wonders for your complexion. Be sure to consume plenty of antioxidant-rich vegetables, especially those that are high in vitamins C and E, zinc and selenium for skin health. Remember, healthy fats are your friend! Put avocadoes, nuts and oily fish like salmon on your shopping list. Lastly, cut down on sugary foods and carbs with a high glycemic index such as white rice, pasta and bread, as these may cause you to look older (check out this recent study).

Resolution #2: Drink more H2O

Water is the main component of our cells and tissues. Deficiency has been linked to several dermatological issues, and studies such as this one show that higher water consumption may positively impact skin physiology. This year, commit to consuming a minimum of 2L of water a day. If you really want to get serious, you could even download an app to track your water intake! Check out the Waterlogged app, for example.

Resolution #3: Get more sleep

Ever noticed how you tend to have a healthy glow after a good night’s rest? It’s because when we’re asleep, our bodies boost blood flow to the skin. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation and poor sleep habits can impact skin health. One study found that chronic poor sleep quality was associated with increased signs of intrinsic ageing, diminished skin barrier function and lower satisfaction with appearance. Do your face a favour and make sure you get 8 hours of shut-eye a night!

Resolution #4: Ramp up the exercise

For many people, getting fit and healthy is at the top of their New Year’s resolutions list. There are many benefits of regular exercise, and one of them is improved skin health. Exercise increases blood flow, meaning more oxygen is delivered to cells and more waste like free radicals can be carried away. Studies have found that exercise can keep your skin looking younger, while also potentially reversing the signs of ageing (check out this study). Hit the gym, go for a walk, or take up a new sport in 2018. Get out there and get active!
