Treating skin from within….
Skincare is constantly developing. We’re looking for new and exciting ways to help you find your healthiest and best skin!
Often you’ll hear our clinicians reference that our skin can be an external representation of what’s occurring within, so it makes sense that we’re now treating the skin from within! This is where supplementation of a few key ingredients can boost skin (and overall) health. This also serves the concept that “anti-aging” is no longer only about appearance, but includes inner health and vitality too.
It is important to note that many of these nutrients will be gained from a balanced and nutrient-rich diet, for which supplementation is not a replacement. If you have any concerns about your intake, you should consult your GP or healthcare provider.
When considering why supplements can help our skin it is good to think about the skin make-up and how it all works together! Our skin consists of two main layers; the Epidermis and the Dermis. The Epidermis is the outer layer of skin, this is what we can see and feel and acts as the barrier between our internal the external. The inner layer, the Dermis is made up of collagen elastin and connective tissue. The Dermis supports and adds structure to the epidermal layer, and because components like the blood vessels, hair follicles and oil glands reside here it also provides nutritional support. It is the hard-to-reach Dermis where nourishing from within can really make a difference.
Nutrients we love for your skin..
Essential Fatty Acids
Omega-3’s EPA and DHA play a very important role in skin (and overall) health. Omega 3’s are not synthesized by our bodies and therefore adding it to our diet and supplement regime is the best way to get the. EPA and DHA can be found in cell membranes as well as playing a vital role in:
- The skin barrier function
- Helping retain moisture
- Distribute melanin that protects against free radical and oxidative stressors
- Assisting in healthy cell turnover
- Inflammation
Essential fatty acids can therefore benefit those with conditions such as
- Dehydrated or tired skin
- Dry and irritated skin
- Acne
- Inflammatory conditions such as Psoriasis or Rosacea
- Impaired, sensitive or reactive skin
- Anybody wanting to achieve optimal skin health

Nicotinamide Riboside and Niacinamide
Is a water soluble active forms of B3. It has been widely studied in Dermatology for its benefits to skin. Found in small quantities in yeast, lean meats, fish nuts and legumes and often added to foods.
Nicotinamide is important in:
- Cellular Energy by acting as a precursor
- Modulating inflammatory cytokines
- Inhibiting enzymes that can damage existing cells
- Boosting NAD+ levels, a molecule needed for cellular processes
Benefits in the skin include:
- Anti inflammatory effect
- Sebum regulation
- Improved barrier function
- Improved cellular processes such as turn over
This can be great for inflamed or reactive skins, ageing or dull skin, uneven skins and even acne or rosacea skins.
Antioxidants
Many of your existing topical skin care products will be full of anti oxidants such as Vitamin C, E or A. Antioxidants can prevent or delay some types of cell damage by counteracting free radicals and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress and free radicals are generally a result of environmental sources such as pollution, UV, alcohol and tobacco use.
Some of the exciting effects of antioxidants are:
- Defence against pro-ageing and cell damaging agents
- Promote firm skin by slowing the deterioration of collagen and elastin
- Calm sensitivity and reactivity
Think of Antioxidants as cell protectors! Fighting damage from things we cannot see but have been proven to cause cellular and visible ageing effects.
During your next consult or treatment have a chat to your clinician about some if the great ways we’re treating skin from within, with supplements but also with some great treatments like Laser Genesis and LED.
