Sleep your way to great skin!

Could Sleep be the key to better skin?

Now that Daylight Savings are here, many people find it can interfere with sleep patterns, and a good night’s sleep has many health benefits, including better skin!

How will a good night sleep improve my skin?

We all want bright, fresh, clear, hydrated, illuminated skin. Could it be as easy as a good night sleep?

A good night’s sleep gives you the energy you need to get through the day and function at your best. Sleep or getting enough rest can help you manage your stress and reduce your risk for serious health problems like obesity, diabetes, stroke.

Poor sleep can lead to increased stress hormones in the body that increase the severity of inflammatory skin conditions such as acne or psoriasis, resulting in increased irritation and disrupted sleep.

During the day skin cells are in defence mode, working to protect themselves from UV exposure and free radical damage. At night your mind and body switch into an active regeneration mode, repairing daytime damage and boosting the production of substances that protect and renew. In particular, collagen is produced during sleep, decreasing fine lines, and preventing premature ageing of the skin.

What Is Happening To My Skin While I Sleep?

When we sleep our body will start producing human growth hormone from the pituitary gland.  This hormone is necessary for the maintenance of youthful and radiant skin, it increases muscle mass and strengthens the elasticity of our skin. If this hormone release was to stop, the skin would not repaired from daily damage.

During sleep cortisol, the stress hormone level decreases. This is what helps repair any damage from the day time. The skin’s temperature drops to its lowest point allowing muscles to relax and become immobile, giving skin its deepest recovery of the night.

As you sleep, your skin’s collagen production increases, plumping cells and helping your skin’s protective outer barrier retain moisture, a key part of avoiding dryness.

Getting a good night’s sleep will keep you feeling full of energy and, will improve skin health, keeping you looking youthful.
