All About Skin Needling – Your Questions Answered!

Southern Cosmetics Shoot2 82
So many clients have heard of Skin Needling but are perhaps a little nervous or hesitant to try what can sound like a daunting or invasive procedure!  We thought we’d explain the  treatment we perform here at Southern Cosmetics, why we love it, what to expect and what’s changed in our new protocols.

What is Microneedling?

As the name suggests, Microneedling utilises a small pen like device that contains multiple small needles, that create micro-injuries or micro-channels by rapidly and repeatedly penetrating the skin. The needles penetrate at different depths at very rapid speeds, which your clinician will control and will determine depending on what your primary concern is.

Microneedling promotes haemostasis, in which nutrient rich blood surges to the treatment site upon the initial trauma. In the days after the treatment the inflammatory process is activated, promoting healing and the release of growth factors. It is after this stage that cell proliferation and maturation occurs, the production of collagen and the overall refining and remodelling of the skin. Collagen remodelling can continue from this point for months after your initial treatment.

What can Microneedling treat?
  • Anti-ageing, by taking advantage of the bodies natural wound response Microneedling increases collagen and elastin to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Pigmentation, unlike laser Microneedling treats pigmentation without the application of heat to the skin which can reduce risks of hyperpigmentation. This can be a great option for clients predisposed to hyperpigmentation or prone to/suffering from Melasma.
  • Enlarged pores, by plumping and tightening skin, appearance of enlarged pores can be reduced,.
  • Scarring, this device is ideal for scar treatment. Variable depths can target scars via stimulating a controlled wound healing response
  • Acne, by stimulating cell renewal and promoting repair and encouraging lymphatic drainage.
So overall the appearance, texture and health of anybodies skin can benefit from this treatment!

Will I need to prep my skin before hand?
We’ve discussed before the benefit of treating the skin at home with a potent and bespoke skin care regime for your skin and your concerns. Not only will this further your treatment results but it will also prepare the skin for the controlled injury we are utilising when we perform Micro-Needling. Part of the control in a controlled injury comes from knowing and counting on how the skin will heal, this will determined by the quality of the skin which is where homeware will come in to things. For a safer and better treatment we recommend beginning with a consultation, which will incorporate a treatment plan as well as home care.

I’ve heard of multiple types of Microneedling, how do I know which is which?

As with any treatment or product many brands and names exist. We can only speak for ours and why we love it.

At Southern Cosmetics we use Dermapen 4:

  • An advanced Microneedling device
  • A variable depth of 0.2mm – 3.00mm, adjustable depth and speed gives a greater range of treatment options
  • Creates up to 1,920 micro channels per second – an average of 104% more micro channels when compared to other devices
  • Holds the CE mark approval and the ISO13485 certificate; making it a trusted medical grade device.
  • Creates amazing results, with minimal trauma
  • Can be combined with Meso-Glide additives and Uber Peel, to safely delver potent, results driven actives deep into the skin without irritation to further treatment results.
  • Built in anti-contamination management for safer practice.

Does it hurt?
As a Doctor owned and operated clinic we can administer a topical anaesthetic before your treatment. This means we can deliver deep and extensive treatments with little to no discomfort.

What can I expect after my treatment?
Initially there will be come flushing, redness and maybe swelling. As the topical anaesthetic wears off the skin might start to feel warm, this is a normal response to the increase in blood flow in response to the initial injury. The redness will subside in the first 24-48 hours, from here from light flaking may occur. The overall healing response should take about 3 – 7 days.

What does a Treatment Plan look like?
We often recommend a course of treatments, between 3 – 6  treatments spaced 6 weeks apart. However with any consultation we will discuss your concerns, goals, what you’re doing at home and potentially blending of treatments to reach said goals. There is no one size fits all approach to healthy skin so we will tailor your treatment plan specially to your needs.

What’s new about Microneedling at Southern Cosmetics?
We have now extended our Microneedling protocol to include Meso-Glide and Uber Peel.

Meso-Glide are potent formulations of ingredients that are used during your Micro-Needling treatment. We have different blends to target different concerns, and your Microneedling will delivery those ingredients safely. This means we are not only delivering a targeted and intensive mechanical treatment but also combining a chemical topical to really enhance your Microneedling results.

We have blends that target:

  • Hydration and visibly signs of ageing
  • Scars and deeper lines
  • Brightening the skin and lightening uneven skin tone
  • Acne and congested skin

Any residual product that remains you can take home to continue to apply, you can do this immediately post Microneedling or even two weeks later with a DermaRoller.

We also apply UberPeel post treatment.

Uber Peel is an intensive peel designed specifically for application post skin needling. Delivering a powerful blend of ingredients to increase cell turnover, brighten and lighten pigmentation, help clear congestion and overall heal and boost the health of the skin.

Free DermaRoller to use at home post treatment!

We will also send you home with a DermaRoller! This is a mini Microneedling session for at home. Your clinician will talk you through how to use this and provide you with a clear guide. This can be used in between Microneedling sessions and with appropriate skin care to deliver some truly impressive results.
